Earlier this week, I hit the studio with Brothers Box to record their latest ditty to prepare an all-out assault on the summer festival circuit. With just two microphones and a quick huddle, these boys demonstrated what is so unique about their sound.
When you record voices beat-boxing, you open up a world of possibilities. Naturally, I treated the voices as percussion sounds instead of conventional melody-and-message-makers. For this task, I opted for the dual 421s, classic mics for all kinds of drums and the same vocal mics used by Run DMC throughout their reign in the 80s.
I look forward to seeing these guys take on 2016. They’ve definitely got a style unlike anything else out right now, a throwback to the ‘golden era’ of hip-hop showmanship.
