Day 7: Oceanographers at Monarch Studios

Today, it’s all about the lead vocals. No blaring amplifiers or crashing drumkits… just a vocal mic and a vocalist, and little guidance from an established producer.

Between takes, Clayton and producer Tom Dobrzanski discuss specific moments in the music: A verse vocal that needs more oomph, a chorus line that seems to rush the tempo, a simple pitch adjustment on certain words. They keep a tab on the moments that seemed to work extremely well, while Tom quietly grabs lines from various takes to put together a lead vocal ‘comp’. With a small audience in the control room, Clayton seems to gain momentum.

From the darkness of the vocal booth, the Oceanographers sophomore release is coming to life…
